Why You Need Trauma Straps?

If you work at height, you already know how essential a safety harness is. But there's one small piece of equipment that often gets overlooked — the trauma strap.

When a fall occurs, hanging motionless in a harness for too long can lead to suspension trauma — a dangerous condition caused by restricted blood flow to the legs. It can happen in just a few minutes. That's why suspension trauma straps (also known as trauma relief straps) are a crucial addition to your fall protection setup.

When Do You Need Trauma Straps?

You'll need suspension trauma safety straps whenever there's a risk of falling — such as on construction sites, towers, bridges, or wind turbines.

After a fall, these harness accessories can literally save your life. The trauma strap allows you to stand up in your harness, reducing pressure on your thighs and restoring circulation while waiting for rescue.

Even though trauma straps are not CE-certified products themselves, they're designed to work alongside CE-approved safety harnesses. In a real fall, your fall arrest system will stop you from hitting the ground — but your harness leg straps can still dig painfully into your thighs. Waiting for rescue in that position is not only uncomfortable but potentially dangerous.

By deploying suspension relief straps, you can stand on the strap loops, relieve leg tension, and extend your safe suspension time. It's a simple, lightweight addition that can make a life-saving difference during rescue.

How to Use Suspension Trauma Straps?

Using fall protection trauma straps is straightforward — and knowing how before an emergency makes all the difference.

  1. Attach each pack (‘R’ and ‘L’) to your harness at the correct position.
  2. Thread the pack loop through the harness webbing — this creates your suspension trauma webbing connection.
  3. Secure the Velcro and double-check that both packs are firmly fixed.
  4. In case of a fall, pull out the straps from both sides.
  5. Hook the loops together, step on them, and stand up to relieve pressure.
Regularly inspect your rescue trauma straps — replace them immediately if you notice wear or damage. Reliable gear is the best form of protection.
